In this article we are going to cover the most common issues you could be having with your dishwasher. If your dishwasher isn't working properly, there is usually a fix that can prevent you from the horrors of hand washing everything.
7 Common Dishwasher Issues
Loud Noises Coming From Your Dishwasher
If there are loud noises coming from your dishwasher, there could be a number of different factors. How old is your dishwasher? There may be some parts that are loose or worn out that could be causing this noise.
Before jumping to that conclusion, you should check your dishwasher for any hard objects that could have been left loose inside the dishwasher (i.e. bones, errant knives or forks, etc).
You also want to make sure that your dishwasher is level so that when you run a cycle, the unit isn't shifting from side to side.
If the noise that you're hearing is a loud thump, what you are dealing with is a bad water inlet valve.
Dishwasher Not Dispensing the Detergent
If you're dishwasher isn't dispensing the detergent, it could be as simple as you putting in too much detergent or there is something large inside your dishwasher that's blocking the dispenser (i.e. large cutting board).
Dishwasher Water Isn't Getting Hot
If you think that the water isn't heating properly you should -- First, hold a thermometer under the water and make sure the water is at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If it's not hot enough, turn up the dial on your hot water heater.
Dishwasher Not Filling
If you run a cycle but your dishes come out dry and dirty, your dishwasher is not filling up with water. Check under the sink and make sure the hot water stop valve is fully open. If it is, next check the owners manual for your dishwasher and see if there is access to the water inlet valve; it may be clogged and need to be cleared out or it may need to be replaced.
Dishwasher Not Draining
If you have a small amount of water left in the tub, that's normal. But if you have a significant amount of water left after you run a cycle then check and make sure the drains aren't blocked and if they aren't, check to see if the drain hose is broken.
If neither of these are the issue, then you need a new dishwasher pump.
Leaks Coming From Your Dishwasher
There is several reasons your dishwasher could be leaking. Things to check for -- Using too much detergent, dishes being stacked improperly, making sure the door seal isn't worn or torn and making sure that the pipe connections at the back of your unit are fastened properly.
Worst case scenario is that the bottom of your washing machine has been corroded and if that is the case the only solution is to replace your dishwasher.
